PART 6: THE WALL RICHARD BUILT<\/em>
\nOn my phone screen, the Clearview worker raised a road flare toward the gasoline-soaked containers hidden inside my garage wall.<\/em>

\n\u201cThe permit number belongs to a commercial building on the other side of Columbus.\u201d<\/em>
\nThe document was fake.<\/em>
\nSo was the engineering report claiming my garage could collapse.<\/em>
\nBy the time Detective Morales and I reached my house, firefighters had surrounded the damaged wall.<\/em>
\nThe gasoline had not ignited.<\/em>
\nRichard\u2019s metal containers were still there.<\/em>

\nI pressed my hand against the handwriting.<\/em>

\nThomas stood beside me.<\/em>

\nInside the waterproof box were photographs, laboratory reports, maps, and recordings of trucks entering the old industrial property at night.<\/em>
\nSeveral photographs clearly showed barrels marked with chemical warning symbols.<\/em>
\nOthers showed the same barrels being lowered into deep trenches.<\/em>
\nThe dates went back eleven years.<\/em><\/p>\n

Clearview had not owned the land then.<\/em>
\nBut the company that owned it was controlled by Malcolm Hale.<\/em>
\nVictor\u2019s father.<\/em>
\nRichard had followed the trucks after seeing them pass our house at two in the morning.<\/em>
\nHe recorded license plates.<\/em>
\nHe photographed drivers.<\/em>
\nThen he collected soil and water samples from the edge of the property.<\/em>
\nAn independent laboratory found dangerous levels of industrial solvents.<\/em>
\nOne report contained a handwritten note from Richard.<\/em>
\nIf this reaches the groundwater, every home east of Lawson Road may be affected.<\/em>
\nDetective Morales called state environmental investigators.<\/em>
\nThey arrived shortly after sunrise.<\/em>
\nOne investigator, Dr. Evelyn Brooks, examined the sample containers.<\/em>
\n\u201cThese are old,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need current tests before drawing conclusions.\u201d<\/em>

\nShe looked toward the damaged garage wall.<\/em>
\n\u201cYour husband included a map showing where he collected the samples. Clearview has built over most of those locations.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cBut they haven\u2019t built over my land.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cNo. That may be why they wanted it.\u201d<\/em>
\nMy property was the final place where investigators could reach the original groundwater path without drilling through Clearview\u2019s unfinished buildings.<\/em>
\nIf the company controlled my house, it controlled the easiest place to test Richard\u2019s claims.<\/em>
\nThe fight over my bedrooms had never been about bedrooms.<\/em>
\nIt was about what flowed beneath them.<\/em>
\nAt eight that morning, Detective Morales took me to the police station.<\/em>
\nDaniel was being questioned in another room.<\/em>
\nVanessa had requested an attorney.<\/em>
\nRachel refused to answer questions.<\/em>
