The lawyer told me that in a phone call later, after Gerald had received the documents, he had withdrawn the allegation. There was no dramatic apology. Gerald did not come to my door with flowers or ask me to forgive him.<\/em><\/p>\n

I opened the door but did not invite him in.<\/em><\/p>\n

He nodded, though that did not make it easier.<\/em><\/p>\n

After a while, he said, \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have come with the lawyer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He accepted that. It was not an apology exactly, but it was closer than anything else he offered.<\/em><\/p>\n

The house was eventually sold. I used part of what I received to repair the fence, as Ruth requested. The rest went to the food pantry named in her will. I did not keep paying the water bill after the account changed hands.<\/em><\/p>\n

For a long time, I felt embarrassed when people mentioned that Ruth had left me the house. They assumed there had been some special arrangement between us, something hidden and intimate enough to explain it. There was no secret agreement. There was only a woman who needed help, a neighbor who saw an orange notice, and six years of twenty-nine-dollar payments Ruth never wanted credit for.<\/em><\/p>\n

I still think about the fact that she knew. I had believed I was protecting her pride, but she had been protecting mine too. She let me think my kindness had gone unnoticed because that was the way she wanted to receive it.<\/em><\/p>\n
