\u201cYou paid her bills for years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI paid one bill.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou were in her home when she fell.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI brought in her mail.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou had access.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI was her neighbor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He laughed once, without humor. \u201cThat\u2019s convenient.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawyer looked back at the letter. \u201cThe will leaves the house to Mrs. Doyle, with instructions that the proceeds, if it is sold, be used for repairs to the neighboring properties\u2019 shared boundary.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I had not known that. Ruth and I shared a fence line. It had been leaning for years, but neither of us had been able to justify spending money on it.<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawyer continued. \u201cThere is also a provision directing that the remaining funds go to a local food pantry.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gerald\u2019s face changed again.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cShe left me nothing?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cShe left you a personal letter,\u201d the lawyer said. \u201cAnd the family photographs, unless your mother specified otherwise in another document.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same thing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawyer gathered the pages and placed them back in the envelope. He did not look triumphant. He looked tired, as if the document had given him more work instead of ending anything.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have the payment records?\u201d he asked me.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cKeep them. Don\u2019t alter anything. I\u2019ll need to review them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gerald turned on him. \u201cYou\u2019re helping her?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m advising you about what your mother left and what your allegation requires.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou said the payments mattered.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThey matter as evidence of contact. They do not prove undue influence by themselves.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gerald stepped down from the porch. \u201cShe couldn\u2019t have understood all this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawyer followed him with his eyes. \u201cThen we will need to examine the will, the witnesses, and the records surrounding it. We should not decide the outcome today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That was the closest anyone came to promising me safety, and it was not a promise. It was simply a statement that the facts would have to be considered.<\/em><\/p>\n

Over the next few weeks, I gave the lawyer copies of the water bills and the notices from the county. I also gave him the dates Ruth had asked me to help with ordinary things: changing a lightbulb, carrying in a package, finding her glasses when they were on top of her head.<\/em><\/p>\n

I did not give him private conversations unless they directly concerned the will. Ruth had a right to have some thoughts remain hers, even after death.<\/em><\/p>\n

The will was reviewed. The lawyer spoke with the people who had witnessed it in 2021. No one suggested that I had been present or had pressured Ruth. Her doctor\u2019s records, as the lawyer explained them to Gerald, showed that she had early cognitive decline but remained capable of making several decisions during that period. I was not part of those records, and I was not asked to interpret them.<\/em><\/p>\n

Gerald\u2019s claim did not go forward.<\/em><\/p>\n
