\u201cGerald,\u201d he said, and his voice had gone very careful. \u201cDid you have signing authority on your mother\u2019s accounts?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gerald stared at him. \u201cWhat does that have to do with anything?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cPlease answer me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. She asked me to help with bills.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDid you move money between her accounts?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gerald looked at me then, as if I had put the question in the lawyer\u2019s mouth.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI paid things,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawyer kept reading. His eyes stopped at several places. He did not show the pages to either of us immediately, and I could see Gerald becoming more agitated with every second.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is in there?\u201d Gerald asked.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m reading it,\u201d the lawyer said.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother wrote something about me?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYour mother wrote several things.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawyer stepped away from the porch rail and turned to the first page again. The paper was Ruth\u2019s handwriting, uneven but recognizable. She had written that she knew about the water payments. She had known almost from the beginning.<\/em><\/p>\n

I had not expected that.<\/em><\/p>\n

She wrote that she had found the county notice in the trash and understood what I had done. She also wrote that she never mentioned it because she knew I would stop if she thanked me. She said the money mattered less than being allowed to receive help without having to perform gratitude for it.<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawyer continued reading.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ruth explained that the will had changed in 2021 because Gerald had taken money from an account without discussing it with her. She did not call it theft. She wrote that he had told her the money was being moved for household expenses, but she later learned that some of it had gone toward his own debts.<\/em><\/p>\n

The letter did not contain a dramatic accusation. Ruth had not written that Gerald was evil, and she had not claimed I was her only family. She wrote that she loved her son and did not trust him with everything anymore.<\/em><\/p>\n

That distinction seemed to trouble him more than anger would have.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIs this signed?\u201d he asked.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThen why did you keep doing it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the bill kept coming.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not an answer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the answer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawyer lowered his voice. \u201cGerald, your mother specifically anticipated this concern. She states that Mrs. Doyle never asked for money, never asked for property, and never discussed the will with her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gerald looked up. \u201cShe discussed it with you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cShe told me she had changed it,\u201d I said. \u201cShe did not tell me what was in it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cShe left you the house.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I had known that only because Ruth told me the envelope explained it. Hearing it from Gerald made the front porch seem suddenly too small.<\/em><\/p>\n
