The image on the screen was gray and indistinct.<\/em><\/p>\n

I could not understand what I was seeing.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dr. Evans enlarged one section.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a surgical clip near your left fallopian tube,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd scarring consistent with a procedure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never had surgery there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYour medical records show no such procedure?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She reviewed the chart again.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cThere is an abdominal hospitalization from 2008, but the record only says medication-related treatment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

My hands went cold.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe hospital where I woke up?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She looked at me carefully.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDid anyone explain the treatment in detail?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMichael said my pain was from the stomach pumping.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Dr. Evans did not respond immediately.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then she said, \u201cYou need a specialist and a complete copy of your records. Do not confront anyone until you understand what happened.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I left the office with an imaging disc and a referral.<\/em><\/p>\n

At home, Michael was in the garage repairing a shelf.<\/em><\/p>\n

He looked up.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHow was the examination?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cRoutine.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

His face remained neutral.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cGood.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I went upstairs and searched through the filing cabinet.<\/em><\/p>\n

The hospital discharge paperwork was incomplete.<\/em><\/p>\n

There were pages missing.<\/em><\/p>\n

The medication list included a sedative I had never remembered receiving.<\/em><\/p>\n

The signature on the consent form was not mine.<\/em><\/p>\n

It was Michael\u2019s.<\/em><\/p>\n

I sat at the kitchen table for more than an hour.<\/em><\/p>\n

The affair had given Michael a reason to distrust me.<\/em><\/p>\n

But it had not given him the right to make medical decisions without my knowledge.<\/em><\/p>\n

I called Jake.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMom?\u201d he said. \u201cAre you all right?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI need to ask you something about 2008.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He was silent.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you remember?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDad told me you were sick.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDid he ever say anything else?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Why?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I looked at the signature on the form.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think your father kept something from me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
